In Shadows and Mud“In Shadows and Mud” (2020) documents the duality of racing from horse to trainer, to jockey, to spectator. Through candid and evocative imagery, this series considers a conversation about the complexities and contradictions inherent in the racing world.

As I attended more races and engaged with a range of individuals within the racing community, my perspective shifted from one of disdain to internal conflict. Each race inherently involved significant risk, a fact universally acknowledged by all participants. Nevertheless, the profound passion and love for the sport and the horses themselves were undeniable. Observing the horses showed how they were bred for this purpose, possessing an intrinsic and unyielding drive to compete. This same competitive spirit was evident in my horse and others with Thoroughbred lineage, underscoring the deep-rooted connection between these animals and the sport they were destined to pursue.
